Week Fourteen — Empathy (The Heart)

Understanding Before Action

Empathy is often positioned as a personal trait.

Something you either have
or you don’t.

In practice, empathy is a behaviour.

A series of small, deliberate choices that shape how we interact with others — especially under pressure.

This week in the 365 Acts of Affection focuses on how empathy shows up in everyday leadership.

Listening fully instead of preparing a response.
Considering the pressure someone else may be carrying.
Choosing curiosity over defence.
Acknowledging effort.
Making space for different perspectives.

These are not complex skills.

But they are uncommon.

In organisations, a lack of empathy creates friction.

Assumptions replace understanding.
Reactions replace considered responses.
People disengage when they feel unseen.

Empathy does not remove accountability.

It strengthens it.

When people feel understood, they are more open to feedback.
When context is considered, decisions improve.
When effort is recognised, motivation increases.

Empathy is not about agreeing.

It is about understanding enough to respond well.

This week is an invitation to slow down just enough
to see what is actually happening.

Because better understanding leads to better action.
