Week Twenty-eight — Grit (The Flame)
Grit Is Devotion, Not Determination
When we hear the word grit, many of us picture relentless determination.
We imagine pushing through fatigue, working longer than everyone else and refusing to stop.
But what if we've misunderstood grit entirely?
This week's 365 Acts of Affection explored a different definition.
Rather than celebrating endurance for its own sake, each daily act invited us to remain faithful to what matters: staying with difficult work, responding with calm, continuing despite setbacks, recovering with intention, holding our values under pressure, showing up consistently and thinking beyond immediate rewards.
Together they tell a different story about resilience.
Not one of endless effort.
One of enduring purpose.
This distinction matters.
When grit becomes nothing more than persistence, burnout is inevitable. But when grit is anchored in values, it becomes sustainable. Recovery becomes part of the practice. Reflection becomes part of progress. Rest becomes an investment rather than a retreat.
In leadership, relationships and communities, the people we trust most aren't always those who move the fastest.
They're the people who keep returning to what matters.
Again and again.
Perhaps real grit isn't about never stopping.
It's about never losing sight of what matters.
