Week Ten — Agency (The Flame)

Agency is one of the most misunderstood qualities in leadership.

People often associate it with authority — the ability to direct, control, or command.

But real agency begins somewhere much quieter.

It begins with ownership.

This week in the 365 Acts of Affection explores how agency shows up through everyday decisions: speaking up when something needs to be said, taking responsibility for a choice, acting in alignment with personal values, and interrupting patterns that no longer serve the work or the people around us.

In organisations, agency is contagious.

When one person takes responsibility instead of deflecting it, credibility grows.
When someone aligns their actions with their values, trust strengthens.
When boundaries are clearly named, energy and attention return to the work that matters.

Presence signals self-trust.

And self-trust changes the tone of a room.

The strongest leaders often practise agency without drama. They do not dominate conversations or force outcomes. Instead, they make decisions with clarity, take responsibility for consequences, and back themselves calmly.

Conviction does not need volume.

This week reminds us that leadership rarely begins with permission.

It begins the moment someone chooses to act.
